In Madhya Pradesh government is leaving no stone unturned to bolster crop production and improve the lives of farmers. By addressing the scarcity of irrigation facilities, they have made farming more accessible and lucrative for the state’s food providers. With continuous expansion of irrigation infrastructure, the output of crops has seen substantial growth, translating to increased income for farmers. The state’s agriculture sector is now set on a path of sustainable growth and prosperity.

From open canals to smart pipelines

One of the key initiatives taken by the Madhya Pradesh government is shifting from traditional open canal systems to smart pipelines for irrigation projects. This change has led to a significant reduction in water wastage and optimized water utilization. By efficiently delivering water to the fields through these pipelines, farmers have gained better control over irrigation, ensuring crops receive the right amount of water at the right time.

The “more drop, more crop” initiative

Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “More Crop Per Drop” appeal, the Madhya Pradesh government has crafted a Water Use Efficiency Enhancement Policy. The policy aims to encourage judicious use of water, making sure every drop is put to productive use and water wastage is minimized. With this policy, the state’s Water Resources Department is committed to maximizing the benefits derived from each drop of water used in agriculture.

Empowering farmers with irrigation expansion

The government’s dedication to irrigation expansion is evident in the budget allocation for water management projects. Over the years, the number of medium and large irrigation projects in the state has increased significantly, with 5299 ongoing projects compared to 3345 two decades ago. This emphasis on micro-irrigation practices has facilitated a consistent growth in irrigated areas and improved crop yield for farmers.

Aiming for 65 lakh hectares by 2025

Madhya Pradesh is actively working towards making 65 lakh hectares of land available for irrigation by the year 2025. The current capacity stands at nearly 45 lakh hectares, and the government is determined to bridge the gap in the next two years. This ambitious goal underlines the state’s commitment to rural development and agricultural prosperity.

Conclusion

Madhya Pradesh’s relentless efforts in water management have paid off handsomely, elevating the state as a leader in agricultural productivity. Through the transition from open canals to smart pipelines and the promotion of water use efficiency, farmers now enjoy a stable and prosperous livelihood. By securing sufficient irrigation capacity and optimizing water resources, Madhya Pradesh has unlocked the potential for sustainable growth and self-reliance in agriculture.
