On July 25, Draupadi Murmu takes the oath of office as India’s 15th President. Murmu is the country’s second female president and the first tribal woman to hold the highest constitutional position.
The ceremony was held in the Central Hall of Parliament, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, ex-President Ram Nath Kovind, Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, and many other political leaders.
In a tweet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that in her inauguration speech, she expressed hope and compassion. Murmu emphasised India’s achievements and presented a vision of the future path at a time when the country is commemorating Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
Droupadi Murmu thanked every citizen of the country for their love and support after taking the oath. She also assured the people of India, particularly the youth and women, that they would be given top priority while working on this position.
Why President of India takes oath on 25th July
Since 1977, every president has taken the oath of office on July 25th. India’s first President, Rajendra Prasad, took the oath on January 26, 1950, the day the country became a republic.
In 1952, he won the first presidential election. He won the second presidential election and was President from May 1962 to May 1963. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was elected president on May 13, 1962, and served until May 13, 1967.
Two presidents, Zakir Husain and Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, died while in office and were unable to complete their terms.
Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, India’s sixth president, took the oath of office on July 25, 1977. Following Presidents Giani Zail Singh, R Venkataraman, Shankar Dayal Sharma, K R Narayanan, and A P J Abdul Kalam,
Pratibha Patil, Pranab Mukherjee, and Ram Nath Kovind took the oath on July 25th. Murmu, 64, made history when she easily defeated Opposition Presidential candidate Yashwant Sinha last Thursday. She later became India’s first tribal President.
Murmu defeated Sinha by a large margin, receiving more than 64 percent of the valid votes cast by the electoral college’s MPs and MLAs. He became the country’s 15th president. Murmu received 6,76,803 votes to Sinha’s 3,80,177.
