Mumbai’s Grant Medical College will launch PG course in geriatric medicine

Three new graduate-level programmes are being planned by Mumbai’s Sir JJ Group of Hospitals and Grant Medical College. The government-run hospital intends to begin offering courses in immunohematology transfusion medicine, emergency medicine, and geriatric medicine. The institution applied to the National Medical Council (NMC) last week to get approval to include these courses in the curriculum.

The three courses the medical college intends to offer are all graduate-level courses. The Grant Medical College and Sir JJ Group of Hospitals will be the first public medical college and hospital to offer a postgraduate course in geriatric medicine once the programmes are approved.

Increase number of options for post-graduation students

The medical college aims to increase the number of options for the post-graduation students who seek to practice medicine as well as also help those who seek treatment for illnesses falling under the domain of the courses.

Speaking with a leading news daily, Dr Pallavi Saple, Dean of Sir JJ Hospital said, “Last week we sent the proposal to start the three courses to the National Medical Council and they accepted it. Now they will do an inspection and accordingly take the decision on the courses,” adding that, “Currently, the medical college has 234 seats for post-graduation and 17 seats for the super specialties.” Dr Pallavi mentioned that each new course will hone four seats in total.

Proposal to add 126 seats

Dr. Saple went on to say more about the application, saying that the organisation also asked for permission to raise the number of existing post-graduation seats in all of the college and hospital’s branches. “We have sent the proposal to add 126 seats. The NMC has done the inspection. I hope we soon get our seat strength.”

The dean was commended for the decision to raise the number of seats by Dr. Pravin Singhare, a former head of the division of medical education and research. Dr. Pravin stated that although the BMC medical colleges currently provide the courses, “they were never thought of” in the government system.
