Rashid Khan Creates History: Becomes First Bowler to Take 200 Wickets in Men’s T20Is

Afghanistan’s star leg-spinner Rashid Khan has written a brand-new chapter in cricket history by becoming the first bowler in men’s T20 International history to reach the 200-wicket milestone.

The 28-year-old maestro achieved this historic feat during Afghanistan’s second T20I match against Zimbabwe at the iconic Sharjah Cricket Stadium in the UAE. Entering the match with 199 scalps under his belt, Rashid needed just one wicket to cross the threshold into uncharted territory.

He secured the landmark in the ninth over of Zimbabwe’s chase, trapping opening batter Tadiwanashe Marumani lbw for two runs.

A Decade of Dominance: From Debut to 200 Scalps

Rashid’s journey to 200 T20I wickets showcases his extraordinary consistency in a format typically dominated by batters.

  • Opponent Connection: Interestingly, Rashid made his international T20 debut against Zimbabwe back in October 2015 in Bulawayo. Eleven years later, he reached his 200th wicket against the exact same team.
  • Rapid Speed: The leg-spinner achieved the 200-wicket landmark in just his 120th T20I appearance, maintaining a staggering career average of sub-14 and an economy rate hovering around 6.13.
  • Match-Winning Victory: Rashid’s historic milestone helped Afghanistan restrict Zimbabwe to 202/9 while defending a massive total of 221, securing a 19-run victory and taking an unassailable 2-0 series lead.

Leading the All-Time T20I Wicket Takers List

With 200 wickets, Rashid Khan has built a substantial lead at the top of the all-time list in men’s T20 Internationals, sitting far ahead of his closest active competitors.

Unmatched Consistency and Tactical Genius

What makes Rashid Khan’s achievement even more impressive is his tactical adaptability across global conditions.

Unlike fast bowlers who rely on powerplay overs for quick wickets, Rashid bowls predominantly during the middle overs and high-pressure death overs. Furthermore, he holds the record for taking four or more wickets in a T20I match on 11 separate occasions—the most by any bowler in international cricket history.

Earlier this year, the Afghan captain also surpassed the 700-wicket mark in overall T20 cricket across international and global franchise leagues, cementing his status as one of the greatest short-format bowlers of all time.

At just 28 years old, Rashid Khan continues to redefine spin bowling standards in modern T20 cricket. As he leads Afghanistan forward on the global stage, his 200-wicket milestone sets a benchmark that may stand untouched for years to come.
