ATM Charges Waived During Bank Strike: Relief for SBI, PNB, and Public Sector Bank Customers

Are you worried about withdrawing cash or managing your finances during the upcoming bank strike? You can breathe a sigh of relief. Several major public sector banks have announced that ATM charges will be waived during the three-day nationwide bank strike scheduled from September 28 to 30.

This means that customers of the State Bank of India (SBI), Punjab National Bank (PNB), and other leading lenders can withdraw cash without worrying about extra fees for exceeding their usual monthly free withdrawal limits.

What the ATM Fee Waiver Means for You

Under normal Reserve Bank of India (RBI) rules, bank customers are only allowed a limited number of free ATM withdrawals every month. Typically, this limit is capped at five free transactions at your own bank’s ATM and three at other banks’ machines in major metro cities. Any cash withdrawal transaction beyond this limit usually attracts a penalty fee.

However, to minimize customer trouble during the upcoming bank strike, this cap has been temporarily suspended. From September 28 to September 30, public sector bank customers can use any bank’s ATM across India without paying any additional transaction charges. This temporary waiver acts as a cushion to ensure you have continuous access to your hard-earned money while regular branch services are disrupted.

Which Banks Are Offering This Relief?

Several leading public sector banks have stepped up to support their account holders during this period. The banks offering this ATM fee waiver include:

  • State Bank of India (SBI)
  • Punjab National Bank (PNB)
  • Bank of Baroda
  • Union Bank of India
  • Indian Bank

Bank of Baroda recently confirmed on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that transaction charges will not apply “at any bank’s ATM across India” during the three-day window. Similarly, SBI has urged its account holders to use ATMs, the YONO app, internet banking, and WhatsApp banking to handle their essential banking needs without visiting a physical branch.

Why is the Nationwide Bank Strike Happening?

The upcoming strike has been called by the United Forum of Bank Unions, an umbrella body that represents roughly 90% of India’s banking workforce. Bank employees are preparing to protest for three days, demanding a five-day banking week along with resolutions to other long-pending issues.

Because this strike coincides with the banking sector’s half-yearly account closing period, regional rural banks are also joining the protest. This means significant disruptions in physical branch operations across the country are expected.

Important Tips for Bank Customers

To soften the blow of the strike, the government directed public sector banks to remain open on Sunday, September 27. This gave customers an extra working day to finish their essential branch banking before the strike begins.

If you still have pending banking tasks, here is what you should do:

  1. Use Digital Channels: Switch to mobile banking apps, UPI (Unified Payments Interface), and internet banking for fund transfers and routine tasks.
  2. Withdraw Cash Freely: Remember, you can use any ATM across the country without the fear of extra charges from September 28 to 30.
  3. Private Banks Open: Newer private sector banks like ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, and IndusInd Bank are expected to function normally throughout the strike. You will not face disruptions if you bank with them.

While banking services at physical branches may be temporarily paused, digital channels and ATMs will ensure your financial needs do not have to wait!
