There are many stories about Lord Krishna that show his love for his devotees. Some teach us about faith, some about surrender, and some reveal a simple truth about devotion.
This beautiful story of Lord Krishna and his devotee carries a very simple message: Krishna responds to true devotion, but a devotee must also have the courage to face his own challenges.
The Story of Lord Krishna and His Devotee
Krishna was having his lunch one day.
Satyabama took great pride and pleasure in serving him because Krishna was not a man who came home every day. She rarely got an opportunity to serve him a meal. So, she was serving him with great pleasure and joy.
Everything was peaceful.
But in the middle of his meal, Krishna suddenly got up.
Without even washing his hands, he started running towards the door.
Satyabama was shocked.
She asked him, “What is it? Please finish the meal and then go.”
But Krishna said, “No, I need to go.”
He quickly ran towards the gate.
Satyabama could not understand what had happened. Why had Krishna suddenly left his meal? Where was he going in such a hurry?
But just as suddenly as he had left, Krishna turned back.
He came inside, sat down again, and continued his meal.
Satyabama was even more confused.
She asked him, “Why did you run like this and then turn back? What happened?”
Krishna then explained.
He said that one of his devotees was sitting in the forest. His entire life breath had become “Krishna, Krishna, Krishna.”
The devotee was completely absorbed in remembering Krishna.
But at that very moment, Krishna saw a hungry tiger approaching him.
Seeing the danger, Krishna immediately got up.
He had to go and protect his devotee.
That was why he had suddenly run towards the gate.
But then something happened.
Krishna said, “I went till the gate, but then the fool picked up a stone.”
The devotee, seeing the hungry tiger coming towards him, had picked up a stone to protect himself.
And Krishna turned back.
He said, “Let him handle it himself.”
And Krishna quietly continued his meal.
The Deeper Meaning of Krishna’s Story
At first, this story may sound amusing.
But behind Krishna’s sudden decision to run—and then return—is a beautiful lesson about faith and devotion.
The devotee’s heart was completely surrendered to Krishna. His every breath had become Krishna’s name. Krishna saw his devotion and was ready to come running to protect him.
But the moment the devotee decided to take the matter into his own hands, Krishna stepped back.
The story reminds us that true devotion is not simply about remembering God when we are in trouble. It is also about developing faith, courage and surrender.
At the same time, the story does not suggest that we should sit helplessly and wait for God to solve every problem.
The devotee saw the danger and picked up a stone.
And Krishna’s response was simple:
“Let him handle it himself.”
Perhaps that is the beauty of this story.
God may give us strength, guidance and protection, but we must also learn to face the challenges that come into our lives.
What This Story of Krishna Teaches Us
The story of Lord Krishna and his devotee gives us a simple message.
Faith gives us strength, but faith should not make us helpless.
Devotion can bring us closer to God, but we must still take responsibility for our own actions.
And sometimes, what we think is God’s absence may actually be God’s way of telling us:
“You are strong enough to handle this yourself.”
That is perhaps the most beautiful lesson hidden in this little story of Krishna, devotion and faith.
Krishna may run towards his devotee when he needs him.
But when the devotee finds his own strength, Krishna knows when to step back.
Because true devotion is not about expecting God to fight every battle for us.
It is about knowing that God is with us—even when we have to fight the battle ourselves.
