The Mumbai Corporation has unveiled an ambitious plan to build the city’s first dog shelter home in a bid to control the population of stray dogs before the onset of the monsoon season. The corporation has allocated INR 48.50 lakhs in the budget for the initial phase of the project, which is estimated to cost INR 1.20 crores in total.
Catch, sterilize, and treat 400-500 stray and sick dogs per month
Under the scheme, about 400-500 stray and sick dogs will be caught, treated, and sterilized every month in the dog shelter home. The project will be implemented under the public-private partnership (PPP) mode, with the corporation providing the infrastructure, and private organizations and pet lovers chipping in for the care of dogs, food, and other facilities.
Mayor Ejaz Dhebar said that the shelter home will have a veterinary hospital to treat sick and aggressive dogs. Initially, the shelter home will house around 500 dogs, and after the necessary resources are developed, the number of dogs will be increased.
The project is a significant step towards controlling the stray dog population and reducing the number of dog bites in the city. Earlier, the corporation had tried several methods, including sterilization and relocation, to control the population of stray dogs, but they proved to be ineffective.
In conclusion, the Mumbai Corporation’s decision to build a dog shelter home is a welcome move towards ensuring the safety and well-being of the city’s stray dogs. The shelter home will not only provide a safe haven for stray dogs but also help control their population and reduce the number of dog bites in the city.
