Amidst tensions at the China border, the Indian government has granted approval for a significant defense purchase to enhance the strength of our armed forces. The Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) has approved the proposals totaling 45,000 crores under the ‘Self-Reliant India’ campaign. This decision includes the procurement of advanced weaponry, armored vehicles, and 12 Sukhoi combat aircraft. Also, there will be upgrades to the Dornier aircraft. During the DAC meeting, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh emphasized the need for the armed forces to aim for a minimum of 60-65% indigenous content, as opposed to the current 50%. This move is a significant push towards indigenization.
‘Make in India’ initiative
These procurements, made under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. The purchases will include versatile multi-purpose vehicles, integrated surveillance and targeting systems (ISTARS), artillery guns, and high mobility vehicles for swift and precise deployment. This will enable the armed forces to enhance their capabilities for rapid and accurate strikes.
Enhancing Naval Capabilities
The Indian Navy’s next-generation surveillance vessels have also received approval, which will bolster the operational capabilities of the navy at sea. Additionally, the Indian Air Force will see upgrades to its Dornier aircraft, extending their service life and enabling the use of more aircraft simultaneously.
Precision Strikes with Dhruvastra Missile
The Dhruvastra missile, developed for close-range air-to-surface strikes, will play a crucial role in India’s defense capabilities. Specifically designed for indigenous ALH MK-IV helicopters, this missile can deliver precise strikes from the air. The Sukhoi Su-30MKI aircraft, known for their speed and agility, are equipped to engage and eliminate threats in the air.
Some of these aircraft have been upgraded to launch the supersonic BrahMos missile, which has a range of up to 3,000 kilometers.
These defense acquisitions represent a significant step in enhancing India’s self-reliance in defense production and strengthening the country’s armed forces, especially in the face of border tensions. The modernization and indigenization efforts will further empower India to protect its national security effectively.
