What exactly is ITS?

The Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) makes the roads safe. It is an intelligent system that monitors the route, warns of roadblocks ahead of time, and provides weather forecasts. It is the application of communication and information technology to road transportation.

Features of ITS

  •  The Optical Fiber Cable Network, the Integrated Traffic Management System, and the Toll Collection System are the three core features of ITS.
  •  Visual messaging, video incident detection, traffic infraction control and surveillance, vehicle detection, drone-based surveillance, tunnel management system, and speed and lane enforcement are all examples of ITS.
  •  A tunnel traffic management centre will be part of ITS. In the event of a serious accident, the tunnel’s entrance will be automatically closed by the centre. The technology will also notify other vehicles on the expressway that the road is closed.
  •  CCTV cameras will be used to monitor the entire system. The ITS will collect data on accidents, speed, and weather in real time. This aids in the prevention of mishaps. This also applies to drone cameras.
  •  An electronic toll collection centre will be part of the system. Every 100 kilometers of the freeway will have a centre. Tolls will be collected using FAST Tags.
