Indonesia Opens 2022: HS Prannoy storms into semi-final after defeating Denmark’s Rasmus Gemke

HS Prannoy, India’s Thomas Cup hero, extended his impressive run in Jakarta as the World No. 23 on June 17, reaching the semi-finals of the Indonesia Open Super 1000 tournament. Prannoy defeated Rasmus Gemke of Denmark in straight games to get to the last four of the prestigious competition at the Istora.

The Indian star found another gear

HS Prannoy never trailed World No. 13 Rasmus Gemke during the 40-minute match, defeating the Danish opponent 21-14-21-12. After easily winning the first game, Prannoy allowed Gemke to stay close as the Denmark shuttler attempted to force a decider. However, the Indian star found another gear, scoring 7 points in a row to seal the game.

Prannoy mixed it up wonderfully well as he was assured at the net while picking and choosing his spots wonderfully well in the one-sided match against Gemke.

Played a key role in India’s historic Thomas Cup victory

Notably, Prannoy defeated Gemke in a thrilling Thomas Cup singles tie in Denmark’s semi-final, coming back from a game down to win the hour and 13-minute battle. The Kerala-born shuttler played a key role in India’s historic Thomas Cup victory.

Face China in the Semi finals

Prannoy, who is bidding to end a nearly 5-year wait for a title on the tour, will face China’s Zhao Jun Peng in the semi-final of the Indonesia Open 2022 on June 18 in Jakarta.

In the other semi-final, reigning Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen will face Malaysia’s in-form Lee Zii Jia. While Axelsen overcame Anthony Ginting, the local favorite, in a three-game battle, Lee outclassed Loh Kean Yew of Singapore in the quarter-final tie.

Notably, Prannoy is the only Indian remaining in the draw of Indonesia Open as the big names, including PV Sinddhu and Kidambi Srikanth, crashed out early. In-form Lakshya Sen was ousted in the opening round by Prannoy.
