APPLE ANNOUNCED A PARTNERSHIP TO CONSERVE INDIA’S MANGROVES AND SAVE LOCAL JOBS

Apple has collaborated with two organisations to help conserve India’s mangrove ecosystem and the livelihoods of those who rely on ijob the mangroves in Maharashtra’s Raigad area are the subject of this collaboration. This is part of Apple’s continuous efforts to assist areas who are most impacted by climate change.

Conservation international and the Applied Environmental Research Foundation (AERF) have formed cooperation. The project began in 2021, when Apple awarded AERF a funding to collaborate with the community to protect 2,400 hectares of mangrove forests in Raigad.

The goal of the partnership is to help transition the local economy

AERF will enter into conservation agreements with local community members as part of the cooperation, providing support in exchange for the conservation and protection of mangroves on their land. The partnership’s ultimate goal is to “assist with the transition of the local economy to one that relies on keeping mangroves intact and thriving.

Conservation International will be engaged by AERF to “check the climate advantages of mangroves, accounting for carbon absorbed in both the trees and the soil.” Mangroves operate as carbon sinks, absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it in their soil, plants, and other sediment, in addition to shielding coastal populations from climate impacts like the erratic monsoons and increasing tides that threaten the Raigad area,

In addition to protecting the area’s existing mangroves, the grant funds the restoration of mangroves across a 50-hectare area where they have degraded. Furthermore, the grant will cover the purchase and distribution of portable bio-stoves, which will allow people to cook without cutting down mangroves for firewood.
