STRANDJA MEMORIAL BOXING TOURNAMENT: INDIAN BOXER NANDINI SECURES INDIA’S FIRST MEDAL, ENTERS INTO SEMIS

Indian boxer, Nandini assures India’s first medal at the 74th Strandja Memorial Boxing Tournament. With an exemplary performance on day-3, Nandini has stormed into the semi-finals of the ongoing tournament in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Dominated the opponent

In the women’s +81kg quarter-finals, the 21-year-old pugilist went off to a flying start, dominating Kazakhstan’s Valeriya Axenova from the outset. Nandini stunned her opponent in the third round with her unrelenting hard blows, and the Indian was declared the winner by the Referee Stopping Contest verdict.

Assured medal at the tournament

Nandini, the reigning national champion, has now assured at least a bronze medal in the tournament. She has qualified for the semi-finals, where she will face another Kazakh boxer, Lazzat Kungeibayeva, the former world champion and gold medalist at the 2021 Asian Championships. This medal will be India’s first medal at the 74th Strandja Memorial Boxing Tournament.

Competent from across the world

Seven men and ten women from India are competing in the ongoing event, which has seen exhilarating action in the presence of over 450 boxers from 36 countries across the world, including powerful boxing nations like Kazakhstan, Italy, Russia, and France. In the previous edition, Deepak Kumar and Naveen Boora both won silver and bronze medals for India respectively.
