HIGHLIGHTS:
  • PM Modi will virtually launch Asia's largest Bio-CNG facility in Indore
  • The Bio-CNG facility will be powered entirely by moist waste
  • The bio-CNG facility has a 550-metric-tonne capacity

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually launch Asia's largest Bio-CNG facility in Indore on February 19, 2022.

How will Bio-CNG plant be operated?

The Bio-CNG facility will be powered entirely by moist waste. It is estimated that it will produce 18,000 kg of gas each day. According to the Indore Municipal Corporation, the amount of Bio-CNG will allow the city to run around 400 buses per day.

The plant's capacity

The bio-CNG facility has a 550-metric-tonne capacity. It will generate CNG from 96% pure methane gas.

PPP (public-private partnership) model

Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) and Indo Enviro Integrated Solutions Limited (IEISL) collaborated to build this 'lighthouse plant' under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) concept. Indore Municipal Corporation will earn Rs 2.5 crore every year as a result of this.

The plant's importance

This plant will raise the calorific value of Bio-CNG while also increasing its effectiveness. It will aid in the purification of heavily crowded city air. It will also help to reduce carbon emissions by 1,30,000 tonnes per year.

The plant's location & features

Devguradiya Trenching Ground in Indore is home to the bio-CNG facility.
The different features of the plant include -
  • Separation hammer mill technique and fully automated pre-treatment unit. This will prepare the bio-slurry feed that will be used to power the digesters.
  • Agitators have been put to anaerobic digesters. They operate on the premise of a Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR).
  • 'Vacuum Pressure Swing Adsorption (VPSA) technique' is used to ensure high-quality bio-CNG fuel recovery from raw biogas.

Indore the cleanest city of India

For the fifth year in a row, Indore has been named the cleanest city in India. It ensures that all solid waste is separated at the source. Wet waste has less than 1% contaminants as a result of this process. According to experts, the quality of moist trash in Indore is among the best in the world. This encouraged the private partners to enter a public-private partnership (PPP) bid to build the plant.
