IIT BOMBAY LAUNCHES INDIA'S FIRST NATIONAL CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE IN CARBON CAPTURE AND UTILIZATION

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has announced the opening of India's first National Centre of Excellence in Carbon Capture and Utilization (NCoE-CCU). The Department of Science and Technology, as well as the Ministry of Science and Technology, will support the center's establishment.

The centre will be funded by the Government of India, which was formally approved in December 2021. According to a statement from IIT Bombay, the new centre is the country's first of its kind to be supported by the Indian government.

The National Centre will pave the way for existing research, development, and innovation efforts to be captured and mapped. It will seek to establish a network of researchers, businesses, and other players in the field. There are several founding members of the centre.

Primary focus of research

Understanding the role of carbon dioxide in the global climate, as well as solutions for reducing carbon dioxide emissions from the industrial and energy sectors, will be the primary emphasis of NCoE-CCU research.

Professor Subhasis Chaudhari, Director of IIT Bombay, said, "IIT Bombay has taken the lead in addressing various great challenges in science and engineering and developing end-to-end solutions. The National Centre shall explore and unlock the potential of CCU technologies to lead India in this potential sunshine industrial sector to evolve as a circular carbon economy,”

X-PRIZE Award

Last year, the IIT Bombay team brought honor to the country by receiving the coveted X-PRIZE Award for 'demonstration of carbon dioxide removal. It was announced at the Sustainable Innovation Forum at COP-26 and backed by the Elon Musk Foundation.
