HIGHLIGHTS:

  • An Indian-born engineer created the world's first autonomous traffic control platform.
  • His most recent study has implications for smarter cities, as well as modernizing and optimizing traffic management, which will affect millions of people.

What is in the News?

Vaibhav Ghadiok, an Indian-born engineer, is credited with creating the world's first autonomous traffic management software. With many discoveries and patents to his name, the 36-year-old is a leading figure in the world of robotics. He is the executive vice president of engineering at Hayden AI (Silicon Valley, USA), where he applies his AI and robotics experience to improve global transit networks.

Implications for smarter cities

Vaibhav Ghadiok most recent study has implications for smarter cities, as well as modernizing and optimizing traffic management, which will affect millions of people. He is currently implementing this technology with key US state governments, with intentions to expand globally.

"Our technology will increase public transit efficiency, cut carbon emissions, and make cities more sustainable and connected," Ghadiok said. By improving the human experience, this will have a significant positive influence on millions of lives."

Ghadiok heads a team unique design

Ghadiok heads a team of 30 brilliant scientists and engineers that have designed a camera-based perception platform that can be used to automate traffic and parking management in city fleets such as transit buses and garbage trucks. The perception system creates a detailed 3D semantic map of its surroundings, recognizing things like lane boundaries, parking meters, traffic signs, fire hydrants, walkways, and crosswalks. It refines and updates this map with each subsequent pass. The technology automatically detects problems such as illegally parked automobiles in bus lanes using this map and deep-learning-based computer vision algorithms. Buses can travel faster if such offences are reduced.

More about the technology

This technology allows for effective enforcement, which addresses one of the key critiques of previous bus lane initiatives. Improvements in bus speed result in shorter commuting times and higher ridership. As cities like Delhi, Bengaluru, and Mumbai consider implementing dedicated bus lanes, Ghadiok's technology will play a major part in ensuring their success.
Hayden AI bridges the gap in traffic management innovation by merging artificial intelligence with mobile sensors that can see and reason in three dimensions. It is in the forefront of developing smart solutions for future cities. Its self-driving traffic management platform enables forward-thinking cities to improve urban mobility and community quality of life by making traffic flow safer and more predictable.
