PGCIL CELEBRATES FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF ONE NATION-ONE GRID-ONE FREQUENCY

Highlights

  • The state-owned Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) celebrated the first anniversary of One Nation-One Grid- One Frequency on December 31st.
  • All conceivable precautions are made to keep the grid frequency within the 49.90-50.05 Hz (hertz) band .

“On the 31st of December 2021, POWER-GRID commemorated this historic occasion by hosting a series of events. To commemorate this historic feat, the power ministry lighted up 70 substations and regional headquarters in tricolor across India, according to a release.

In India, the National Grid has a long history.

  • Grid management in India began in the 1960s on a regional level. Grids were initially joined to form a regional grid. Following this, India was divided into five grid-based regions. These regions are:
  1. Northern Grid
  2. Eastern Grid
  3. Western Grid
  4. North Eastern Grid and
  5. Southern region
  • In October 1991, the North Eastern and Eastern Grids were linked.
  • In March 2003, the Western Grid and the North Eastern Grid were linked.
  • The North and East grids were joined in 2006.
  • As a result, four regional grids, the Northern, Eastern, Western, and North Eastern grids, were interconnected to establish a single-frequency central grid.
  • With the commissioning of the 765kV Raichur-Solapur Transmission line in 2013, the Southern Region was connected to the Central Grid.
  • With this, the goal of ‘ONE NATION’-‘ONE GRID’-‘ONE FREQUENCY’ was attained.
  • All conceivable precautions are made to keep the grid frequency within the 49.90-50.05 Hz (hertz) band .

Total Capacity of Transmission

India’s total inter-regional transmission capacity is currently around 1,12,250 MW. By 2022, it is expected to increase to around 1,18,740 MW.

Synchronization’s Importance

By shifting power from resource-centric regions to load-centric regions, synchronization of all regional grids will aid in the most efficient use of natural resources. It would also lead to the formation of a thriving electricity market in India, which will facilitate power trade.

India’s Power Grid Corporation Limited

Power Grid is a statutory organization in India that reports to the Ministry of Power. Gurugram is the company’s headquarters. The company’s major business is bulk electricity transmission across India. Around half of the total power generated in India is transmitted through the power grid.
