The Atal Innovation Ranking 2021 has been released recently by the All India Council for Technical Education and the Union Ministry of Education. Seven Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) are among the top ten key institutes encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship in this list.
For the 3rd consecutive year, the IIT Madras has been recognized as India's "Most Innovative Educational Institute." It is ranked first in the Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA ranking 2021). Whereas, IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi have secured second & third place in the list.

What factors contributed to the ranking?

Based on factors relating to innovation, startup, and entrepreneurship development among students and faculties, the Atal Innovation Ranking 2021 was developed. Centrally funded technical institutes (like IITs, NIITs, etc.), State universities, state technical colleges, private universities, private technical colleges, non-technical government, and private institutions are among the numerous categories of ranking.

About the ARIIA rankings

ARIIA is an organization that conducts systematic rankings of educational institutions and universities. Its goal is to motivate Indian institutions to rethink existing approaches and create ecosystems that promote high-quality research, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

ARIIA evaluates institutions based on factors such as the number of patents filed and granted, faculty start-ups and the number of registered students, the amount of money raised by incubated start-ups, and the specialized infrastructure created by institutions to promote innovation and entrepreneurship, among others.

In the third edition of the ARIIA rankings, 1438 higher education institutions took part, compared to 674 HEIs last year. The results of the ARIIA rankings were released by Dr. Subhas Sarkar, Minister of State for Education. The third edition includes a special framework for non-technical institutions. It will help to boost the innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystem in our education institutions.

Most Innovative Institute for 3rd consecutive year

Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT Madras said, "We are delighted to be adjudged the Most Innovative Institute for the 3rd time in a row since inception of the Atal Rankings on Innovation. IIT Madras places a lot of emphasis on innovations among its students and faculty, which has resulted in a very successful and fast-growing deep technology startup ecosystem in the country," Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT Madras.
