DELHI’S NIZAMUDDIN BASTI PROJECT WINS TWO UNESCO HERITAGE AWARDS

The UNESCO recently offered Heritage Awards to the Nizamuddin Basti Project. The project was awarded for its unique conservation efforts. The Basti got the Special Recognition for Sustainable Award and Award of Excellence.
Nizamuddin Basti and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture shared a double dose of happiness. Since 2009, the city’s urban redevelopment and conservation efforts have won two awards: excellence 2021 and special distinction for sustainable development.

What is Nizamuddin Basti Project?
• The project included the restoration of approximately 20 plus ancient monuments located around 14th century Sufi Saint Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya.
•  Nizamuddin  consists of Humayun Tomb and Batashewala Tomb and the tomb of a 16th-century poet Rahim (Khan I Khanan). These regions had been segregated and broken. They have been additionally renewed under the Nizamuddin Basti Project.
• The mission was initiated in the year 2007 by the Aga Kahn Trust for Culture, Archaeological Survey of India, the Delhi Municipal Corporation, and the Delhi Urban Heritage Foundation.

Objectives of Nizamuddin Basti Project
• The Nizamuddin Basti Project is an Urban Renewal Project. It efficaciously unified the segregated zones of the seven-century antique agreement of the Nizamuddin Basti and its surrounding 70 acres.
• It incorporated socio-economic development, conservation and environmental improvement targets in these areas.
• It unified three fundamental sites specifically Sundar Nursery, Nizamuddin Basti and Humayun Tomb.
