What is Amrit Kaal and Saptarishi used by FM Sitharaman repeatedly in Budget speech?

“This is Amrit Kaal’s first budget,” Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman began her speech like this on the Union Budget 2023-2024. She used the term several times during her speech. While presenting the budget she said that this budget hopes to build on the foundation laid in the previous budget and the blueprint laid for India@100, we envision a prosperous and inclusive India where the benefits of development are shared by all.

She said that the Indian economy is on the right track and heading towards a bright future. India’s global profile is increasing as a result of world-class digital infrastructure and a proactive role in frontier areas. This Budget establishes a futuristic ‘Amrit Kaal’ for women, youth, and marginalised communities, as well as significant public investment in infrastructure led by Prime Minister Gati Shakti, productivity enhancement, energy transition and climate action, and investment financing.

She also stated that our vision for the Amrit Kaal includes a technology-driven and knowledge-based economy, with strong public finances and a robust financial sector. To achieve this ‘janbhagidari’, ‘sabka saath, sabka prayaas’ is essential.

What Does ‘Amrit Kaal’ Mean?

The term derives from Vedic astrology. Amrit Kaal refers to a watershed moment when the gates of pleasure are opened to humans, angels, and monsters. Amrit Kaal traditionally refers to the most auspicious time to begin a new project or business.

Term Was First Used By PM Modi

‘Amrit Kaal’ was first mentioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2021, during the 75th anniversary of India’s independence.

It aims to improve Indians’ lives and bridge the development gap between villages and cities. It also aims to usher in latest technology and digitization while reducing government interference in public life.

PM Modi stated that while India has made rapid progress, there should be a’saturation’ of development and 100% achievement, with every village having roads, every family having a bank account, and every eligible person having health insurance, a card, and a gas connection.

What does Saptarishis mean?

The Finance minister also mentioned the term “saptarishi” while outlining her economic vision. She referred to the seven priority areas on which the government will focus as’saptarishis,’ or seven great sages: inclusive development, reaching the last mile, infrastructure and investment, unleashing potential, green growth, youth power, and the financial sector. These seven focus areas will propel India toward a brighter future, just as the seven sages guided the country into righteousness.
