A Retrospective of 2022: Know the Important Events



The year 2022 is now bidding farewell to us and a new year full of new hopes is standing at our doorstep. From a many firsts to a leader of the G20 group, 2022 brought a lot of POSITIVE for India. Take a look at some of the top events that defined the big events in 2022.

First private train launched under ‘Bharat Gaurav‘ scheme

For the first time, a private person operated a train between Coimbatore and Shirdi under the Indian Railways’ ‘Bharat Gaurav’ scheme.
Indian Railways announced the commencement of the Bharat Gaurav trains, a theme-based tourist circuit train. The Indian Railways has chosen to run 190 Bharat Gaurav trains as part of a public-private partnership.

The goal is to connect the historical and rich cultural heritage of India with the railway so that the people of the country and the world can easily reach these places. Under this scheme, the service provider will offer comprehensive packages to the passengers like rail travel, accommodation, food, sightseeing etc.

Droupadi Murmu elected as the country’s second female President, and the first tribal woman to hold the highest office.

She belongs to the indigenous schedule tribe, and thus the nation is looking forward to a better upliftment of the backward tribes with her appointment as the President, succeeding Ram Nath Kovind.

Previously she was the Governor of Jharkhand. She was the first woman governor of Jharkhand. Murmu served in her office as governor for a tenure of six years and also had the power of the union government.

PM Modi commissions India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier

Prime Minister Narendra Modi commissioned the India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier (IAC), INS Vikrant at Cochin Shipyard Limited in Kochi. The IAC gives a boost to the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative by involving industrial houses.

PM Modi also unveiled the new Naval Ensign (Nishaan), doing away with the colonial past on the occasion. Naval Ensigns are flags that naval ships or formations bear to denote nationality.

Modi described September 2 as a “landmark day for India’s efforts to become Aatmanirbhar in the defence sector” as the first indigenously designed and built aircraft carrier has been commissioned.

Cheetahs, the world’s fastest land animal, became extinct in India 70 years ago, but a wildlife sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh welcomed them back. Prime Minister Narendra Modi released eight Cheetahs – brought from Africa’s Namibia – in the Kuno National Park of Madhya Pradesh, on his 72nd birthday celebrations. This was the most remarkable achievement for wildlife in this century. This would boost tourism.

Cheetah tourism is likely to begin in Madhya Pradesh from February 2023, as the cheetahs brought are healthy and have adapted to Indian conditions. Once released, it will be the first time in over 75 years that cheetahs will be seen in the wild and Tourist footfall is also expected to rise.

5G is the fastest communication network available in the world and is slowly making its way to every country. Many Indian telecom giants welcomed 5G services. 

Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, and more were among the first 13 cities as a part of the launch. 5G in India called as “the beginning of a new era for Indian telecom.”

The 5G launch in India is a part of the Digital India movement and aimed to uplift mainly three sectors, that are, education, healthcare, and agriculture, along with infrastructure and logistics. PM Narendra Modi, with this project, also hopes to increase convenience and create employment opportunities at the grassroots levels.

India’s top two telecom companies, Reliance Jio and Airtel, have now collectively introduced 5G services in around 50 Indian cities, making the latest wireless technology accessible to everyone.

Both men and women cricketers to get equal match fees

BCCI took first step towards tackling discrimination, implemented a pay equity policy for Women cricketers. The match fee for both Men and Women Cricketers kept same as we move into a new era of gender equality in Indian Cricket.

According to the new policy, like men, women cricketers will also earn INR 15 lakh for a Test, 6 lakh for an ODI and 3 lakh for a T20I. Currently, female cricketers get INR 1 lakh for an ODI or T20I and 4 lakh for a Test match.

This was a historic decision for women’s cricket in India.

PM Modi Unveiled ‘Statue of Prosperity’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday unveiled the ‘Statue of Prosperity’, the 108-feet tall bronze statue of Bengaluru founder Nadaprabhu Kempegowda on the premises of the Bengaluru International Airport. It has been built to commemorate the contribution of Kempegowda towards the development of the city. No other airport in the world has such a tall statue of its founder and this goes as a record in the World Book of Records

PM Modi also inaugurated Terminal 2 of the KempeGowda International airport in Bengaluru. The terminal is built at a cost of Rs 13,000 crore to cater to additional 2.5 crore passengers annually.

Global Investors Meet 2022

Karnataka Government laid a red carpet for global investors, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told delegates at the Global Investors’ Meet on November 2 through video-conferencing.

The government encouraged investments in various sectors that were earlier closed to private investments, such as defence, drones, space and geospatial mapping.

India took over the presidency of the G20 forum from Indonesia on December 1. It is a huge opportunity for India. G20 Summit is held annually under a rotating presidency, which currently rests with India for 2023.

Apart from hosting the summit and deciding on the theme, the G20 presidency has no formal powers. However, India intends to highlight its philosophies of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (one earth, one family, one future) and LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) through the event’s theme and logo.

India’s first privately developed rocket, Vikram-S was successfully launched in a sub-orbital mission from the Sriharikota spaceport marking a new era in India’s space programme. It is considered a turning point for space startups and a new beginning for ISRO.

The rocket has been developed by Indian space technology startup Skyroot Aerospace. It is named after Vikram Sarabhai, the founder of India’s space programme.

India’s first Digital Currency — the Digital Rupee — has been launched by the Reserve Bank of India on 1st November 2022. The first trial for digital currency has been ordered to take place in four cities in India on 1st December 2022. Digital wallet, offered by banks, aims to use digital currency. The digitalization of the Indian Currency aims at improving the digital currency of India and will help in simplify payment operations. This will also aim at reducing the dependence on cash currency.
