Wipro has allowed its employees in Europe to form unions. It is the first IT company in India to do so. Employees will be able to form a European Works Council (EWC) and hold debates on their concerns.
Wipro’s unionised employees come from 13 different countries, including France, Sweden, Finland, and Germany. The company employs over 30,000 people in Europe.
European Works Council
The EWC will be led by employee representatives elected or appointed from the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA). Wipro’s CEO for Europe and a team of regional business heads will continue to sponsor the chair.
“The key purpose of the EWC is to build an inclusive and sustained working relationship with employee representatives of all countries, to share and deliberate on matters of transnational interest and enlist the voice of people. This is a progressive arrangement, maintaining the best of European standards and ways of working,” Wipro stated.
First meeting in 2024
The body’s first meeting will take place in 2024. The EWC will elect its chairman and select committee members at the meeting, according to the report. Wipro employees will also be consulted on the company’s progress.
Wipro incurred Rs 136 crore in restructuring charges in September to address inefficiencies in Europe.
