Meet India's First Woman Ambassador to the UN, topper of UPSC in 1987

IFS officer Ruchira Kamboj, India's first female ambassador to the United Nations, was the winner of the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 1987. On August 1, 2022, the 58-year-old took over as India's permanent representative to the United Nations, succeeding TS Tirumurti. She also finished first in the foreign service batch. Her first assignment was in Paris. She worked as the third secretary at the Indian Embassy in France from 1989 to 1991.

From 1991 to 1996, Kamboj worked as an additional secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs' Europe West division after beginning her diplomatic career in Paris. From 1996 to 1999, she worked as the first secretary in Mauritius and at the Indian High Commission in Port Louis.

India's first female envoy to the United Nations

She is India's first female envoy to the United Nations, having been born on May 3, 1964. Kamboj, an inspiration to all Indian women, topped the women's category in the 1987 civil services examination. She was also the country's first female ambassador to Bhutan. She has also served as India's High Commissioner to South Africa and as the country's Permanent Representative to UNESCO. She worked as a counsellor in India's Permanent Mission to the United Nations from 2002 to 2005.

Kamboj's late father was an Indian Army officer, and her mother is a Sanskrit professor and writer at Delhi University (retired). Diwakar Kamboj, her husband, is a businessman. Sara is their daughter's name.

Ruchira Kamboj's home has always had an educational atmosphere. Because her father was in the army, her education took place across the country. Ruchira Kamboj received her education in Delhi, Vadodara, and Jammu. In addition, she attended the Wynberg Allen School in Mussoorie. She earned a bachelor's degree from Delhi University as well as a master's degree from the London School of Economics. She speaks Hindi, English, and French fluently.
