Bio CNG Plants: Gas made from waste! Car will run and chulhas can lit



Now the people of Delhi will get great convenience from organic waste. MCD is working on a plan to set up three Bio-CNG plants. Around 700 tonnes of garbage will be smelted every day in the under-construction plants of Ghogha, Nangli and Okhla. This will produce about 28,000 kg of compressed bio gas. It can also be used as LPG along with vehicles. MCD has tied up with IGL for this. Interestingly, dairy operators will also get the benefit of this agreement. The corporation will take cow dung from the dairy and give them money in return. These three plants will be ready by March next year.

According to officials, work has started on three acres of land at Ghogha in Narela zone. At the same time, construction work is going on in Nangli and Okhla also. Bio-CNG will be produced by compressing about 200 tonnes of organic waste every day at Ghongho and Nangli, while the plant at Okhla will be the larger of the two and will compress 300 tonnes of organic waste every day. With this, there will be a proper solution to the waste coming out of the dairy and the natural gas generated will be able to drive vehicles and chulhas can also be lit. Apart from this, the waste from these plants will be used as organic manure. According to the officials of the Engineering Department, the work of installing digesters at all the three plants is going on. The corporation has placed an order for the purchase of machines for the plant. Machines are expected to come soon, after that the work will proceed at a faster pace.

According to Ashwani Kumar, Special Officer, MCD, there was a plan to set up one such Bio-CNG plant in the first year. But the work was stopped due to lack of cooperation from the local people. Later the Hastsal plant was shifted to Ghogha. Due to the abundance of dairies in all the three areas where the plant will be set up, they will easily get cow dung in sufficient quantity. In return, the corporation will pay them money.

Bio CNG made from organic waste in this way

In the Bio-CNG plant, bio-gas is first made by smelting the organic waste. If the amount of hydrogen sulfide in it is more than 1500 parts per million, the sulfur is removed from the gas. The gas is then upgraded to make it suitable for CNG. Bio-CNG contains 92 to 98 percent methane and two percent carbon dioxide, while bio-gas contains 55 to 65 percent methane and 34 to 45 percent carbon dioxide. The calorific amount of Bio-CNG is 52 thousand kilojoules. This is about 167% more than bio-gas. Bio-CNG has high methane and calorific content and low moisture content, making it suitable for fueling vehicles.

Dry waste is still being collected at landfill sites, while the corporation has set up several plants to make compost from organic waste. Apart from this, three waste to energy plants are also running using organic waste. But despite this, a large amount of organic waste remains in Delhi, which will be used at the Bio-CNG plant.

Delhi generates around 4,400 metric tonnes of organic waste every day, which is still being used at waste to energy plants and compost plants. But now this waste will be used on Bio CNG plant.
