Hindi Diwas is celebrated every year on 14 September. This day holds special significance as Hindi was adopted as an official language by the Constituent Assembly on September 14 in the year 1949. The date was chosen by the first Prime Minister of independent India, Jawaharlal Nehru. Interestingly, Hindi is a Persian word and the first poem in the language was written by Amir Khusro, a famous poet. The Hindi word in Persian roughly means 'Land of the Indus River'. Hindi is the fourth most spoken language in the world after Mandarin, Spanish and English.

Hindi Diwas: History

The day dedicated to Hindi was first celebrated in 1953 on the suggestion of Rashtrabhasha Prachar Samiti. The reason behind marking the day was to increase the importance of language. Hindi Diwas is also the birth anniversary of Rajendra Singh. He was an Indian scholar, Hindi-distinguished, culturalist, Ramayana-right, and a historian. Apart from this, his role in making Hindi the official language of India was also huge.

The idea of making Hindi the national language was first brought by Mahatma Gandhi during the Hindi Sahitya Sammelan in 1918. The Constitution of India recognizes Hindi as an official language under Article 343.

Former Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the first leader to address an international audience globally in Hindi in 1977. He was the foreign minister at that time. He gave a speech in Hindi in the United Nations General Assembly.
