Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham Launches All-India Coding Competition for Girls

The ICPC Algo Queen Girls’ Programming Cup is a virtual coding competition being held by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham for female students in classes 8 through 12. The first-of-its-kind event, supported by IBM Quantum, aims to inspire Indian females to participate in coding competitions by offering them instruction in quantum computing and competitive coding.

“Designed primarily for girls, it will offer workshops and competitive programming opportunities designed to rapidly develop coding skills and algorithmic problem-solving prowess,” said Dr William Poucher, executive director of ICPC. Admissions for programme are free and open at amrita.edu. The last date to apply is October 25.

Certifications from ICPC’s premier worldwide competitions

The event will include weekly online educational sessions, workshops, multi-tier tournaments, and career advice events. Through them, students would be able to engage in a flexible manner, advance their algorithmic knowledge, learn how to programme quantum computers, and receive certifications from the ICPC’s premier worldwide competitions. The championships will take place in February 2023.

Prof Maheshwara Chaitanya, director, admissions and academic putreach, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, who is also deputy director, ICPC Asia said “Only 28 per cent of the world’s researchers are women. We need more girls to be part of the technological revolution, especially in competitive programming and coding. We need to understand which obstacles keep girls away from STEM and how we can encourage them to overcome these. The aim of the ICPC Algo Queen Programming Cup is to stream the brightest mathematical minds among girl students into a productive world of algorithms and computer science.

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has been hosting the world’s largest collegiate programming contest, the ICPC, for the past 15 years in India. Now, we wish to provide free training in programming to girl students through the ICPC Algo Queen Programming Cup.”

Quantum Explorers programme

IBM Quantum is working to lower entry barriers for students all over the world because it thinks that quantum education should be inclusive and accessible. The Quantum Explorers programme, a gamified method to learning quantum, will be run by IBM Quantum throughout the 2022–2023 ICPC Algo Queen season. It includes interesting study materials, seminars, achievements to unlock, and career counselling. In addition to learning how to programme actual quantum computers, participants will also obtain a general grasp of quantum computing and some applications including quantum machine learning and optimization.

The Algo Queen Girls’ Programming Cup, which was first held locally in the Asia West region, will take part in a number of ICPC Global events and is also available to competitors from other parts of the world. For more than 40 years, the ICPC Foundation has worked to close the gap by supporting underserved areas, boosting ambitions, enhancing performance, and bringing people together through its initiatives and activities.
