Good news for Indian students wishing to start a job search or continue their higher education in the UK! Certain bachelor's, master's, and doctorate degrees earned by Indian students will now be treated equally with those earned by students in the UK.

However, this arrangement does not include professional degrees like medical, engineering, architecture, or pharmacy.

The development assumes significance as it will also make students who have completed graduation or post-graduation from India eligible for jobs in the UK.

Enrollment at UK higher education institutions

The two parties signed an MoU outlining the Indian Senior Secondary School/Pre-University Certificates that will be accepted for enrollment at UK higher education institutions. The Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral degrees awarded in India and the UK will likewise be regarded as being equal.

Professional degrees in medicine, engineering, architecture, and pharmacy are not covered by the MoU. According to Commerce Secretary BVR Subrahmanyam, New Delhi will argue for their inclusion in the free trade deal, whose negotiations are anticipated to wrap up by August 31 and be completed by Diwali.

“From today onwards, UK degrees will be recognised as equivalent to Indian degree. You can take a degree there and will be eligible for employment her. This covers 90 percent of the graduates,”
Subrahmanyam told, adding that degrees in Bachelor and Masters of Arts (BA, MA) and Science (BSc, MSc) in India would be treated on par there. The MoU also covers degrees obtained from online courses.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) calls for the mutual recognition of academic credentials and length of study by students enrolled in legally recognised higher education institutions in the two nations.

“The pact will also speed up the negotiations. It is a message from their side that irrespective of the political turbulence, things are on track,” he said.
