The government of India wants people to follow some security tips while sharing and using Aadhaar card.

Download Aadhaar card only from official UIDAI website

Make sure that you download your Aadhaar card only from the official UIDAI portal -- https://eaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/genricDownloadAadhaar.

Avoid downloading your Aadhaar card on a public computer/laptop

To download an e-Aadhaar, youy must avoid using a public PC/laptop at an internet cafe/kiosk. However, if you do, then it is highly recommended to delete all the downloaded copies of e-Aadhaar.

Secure your data by locking/unlocking Aadhaar online

Aadhaar card holders are given facility by UIDAI to lock their Aadhaar biometrics to prevent any possible misuse by anyone. To lock/unlock your Aadhaar, use mAadhaar app or click on the link: https://resident.uidai.gov.in/aadhaar-lockunlock. Kindly note that your VID or Virtual ID is mandatory for this service. VID is a temporary, revocable 16-digit random number mapped with the Aadhaar number.

Check your Aadhaar authentication history regularly

It is advised to check your Aadhaar authentication history regularly. You can check the Aadhaar authentication history of up to 50 authentications in the past 6 months. The exact date and time of authentication are mentioned in the results, which can help you notice if there's an unintended authentication entry. This will help you keep a watchful eye on any authentication not done by you. In case you find something suspicious, report it to 1947 or help@uidai.gov.in

Set a password for your m-Aadhaar app

Passwords provide the first line of security against any unauthorised access to your personal information. It is advisable to set a 4-digit password for your m-Aadhaar app.

Use VID or Masked Aadhaar

Not a security tip per se, but a suggestion to Aadhaar card holders worried about security: UIDAI says that if you don’t want to disclose your Aadhaar number, then you can use VID or Masked Aadhaar, it is valid and accepted widely. To get VID/masked Aadhaar, download Aadhaar from here: https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/genricDownloadAadhaar

Verify Aadhaar shared with you

Any Aadhaar is verifiable, both online/offline. To verify offline, scan the QR code on e-Aadhaar or Aadhaar letter or Aadhaar PVC card. To verify online, enter the 12-digit Aadhaar on the link:

Keep your mobile number updated in Aadhaar

Make sure that you have your mobile number updated on your Aahaar card. If you have any doubt about whether your correct mobile number or email has been linked with Aadhaar, you can verify the same on UIDAI website.

Never disclose your Aadhaar OTP

Another important security tip is to never disclose your Aadhaar OTP and personal details to anyone. UIDAI tells citizens that they will never receive a call, SMS, or email from UIDAI asking for your Aadhaar OTP.
