Mumbai AC local train fares have been cut by half, A 5km journey will now cost Rs 30

There is good news for Mumbai local train passengers! The fare for AC local trains has been reduced by half. According to Union Minister Raosaheb Danve, the “existing minimum fare of Rs 65 for a distance of 5 km will now be reduced to Rs 30.”

The Minister went on to say that lowering the fare of air-conditioned local trains had been a long-standing public demand. However, no date has been set for the revision of fares. Daily, approximately 80 air-conditioned local train services are operated on both the Central and Western Railways in the largest city.

The railway board announced in the evening that new fares would go into effect on May 5

Danve was speaking at the inauguration of the restored heritage building of Mumbai’s Byculla railway station, which was attended by BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis.

According to the minister, the Railway Ministry had received suggestions that the current fare is reduced by at least 20-30%. Every day, approximately 80 AC local train services operate on Central and Western Railway routes in the Mumbai region.

Routes and fares

According to Danve, the fare between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Thane (34 km) will be reduced from 130 to 90.

The minister stated that the distance between CSMT and Kalyan (54km) would be reduced to 105 from 210, the distance between Churchgate and Borivali (34km) would be reduced to 90 from 130, and the distance between Churchgate and Vasai Road (52km) would be reduced to 105 from 210.

“With the common man in mind,” Danve said, “I and our minister Ashwini ji (railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw) decided to reduce the daily single journey fare of AC local train by 50% to provide relief to Mumbai passengers.”

Budget for the State Railways

Meanwhile, Danve claimed that while Maharashtra received 1,100 crores in the railway budget from 2009 to 2014, the Modi government allotted 11,000 crore in this year’s budget alone. All broad-gauge railway lines in the country will be electrified by 2023, according to the junior railway minister, who added that the Modi government has completed 1,900 km of electrification since taking office.

Niti Aayog approves

The Niti Aayog approved the Pune-Nashik railway line project on Thursday, according to Danve, who added that the proposal will be presented to the cabinet soon and construction will begin.

He added that up to 25 railway stations in Maharashtra are being upgraded. In his speech, Fadnavis stated that, in addition to the Byculla station, several heritage sites in Mumbai must be conserved and restored, and he urged the public to properly maintain the restored station building. The restoration of the Byculla station, one of India’s oldest railway stations, began in 2019.
