Every year on March 23, Shaheed Diwas or Martyrs' Day is commemorated to honour the freedom fighters who gave their lives in the fight for India's independence from British control.
The British government hanged Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru, and Sukhdev Thapar on this day, which is remembered as a tragic chapter in history. As a result, Shaheed Diwas is commemorated to honour these heroic revolutionaries who gave their lives to ensure the country's independence.

History and Significance of the Martyr’s Day

Following the assassination of Lala Lajpat Rai, a significant leader of India's independence struggle, in November 1928, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, and others promised to exact vengeance. They planned to assassinate James A. Scott, the British Raj's Superintendent of Police. Scott was the one who ordered the cops to use pepper spray on the demonstrators and launched a personal attack on Rai, injuring him severely. Lala Lajpat Rai was spearheading a silent and nonviolent march against the Simon Commission, but the police retaliated with brutality. This horrifying tragedy was seen by Bhagat Singh.

They did, however, wrongly kill Assistant Superintendent of Police John Saunders. On April 8, 1929, they detonated bombs in the Central Assembly while shouting "Inqilab Zindabad." Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev were accused of Saunders' murder and given the death penalty. The execution date was set for March 24, however Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev were hung at Lahore jail on March 23, 1931.
