For the first time in the Indian history of Supreme Court, nine judges, including three women, took oath at the Supreme Court in one sitting. This historic oath was headed by the Chief Justice of India, N V Ramana. With the swearing-in of the nine new judges, the strength of the Supreme Court has risen from 24 to 33.

Moreover, this will be the first time when the women judges will be on the league to become the Chief Justice of India (CJI)

The nine new judges who sworn in as Judges at supreme court were Abhay Shreeniwas Oka, Vikram Nath, Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari, Hima Kohli, BV Nagarathna, CT Ravikumar, MM Sundresh, Bela M Trivedi and PS Narasimha.

Among the new women Judges, Justice Hima Kohli served as Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court before being appointed as a Supreme Court Justice.   She was appointed as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court on May 29, 2006 and took oath as a permanent judge on August 29, 2007.

Judge Nagarathna is the daughter of the former CJI E S Venkataramiah. She was a judge of the Karnataka High Court before being promoted to the Supreme Court.  Judge Nagarathna was appointed as an additional judge of the Karnataka High Court in February 2008 and was later appointed as the permanent judge there.

Justice Bela M Trivedi, born in June 1960, was a judge of the Gujarat High Court before being elevated to the apex court. She has also served as an additional judge of the Rajasthan High Court.

This is the highest number of women sitting judges Supreme Court ever had in its timeline. Among them BV Nagrathna could be the first woman Chief Justice of India in 2027.
